2018 Elementary Orchestra Program

Elementary Orchestra Program: Grades 3rd & 4th
Now in its 6th year, Zionsville schools are offering a program available to all 3rd and 4th grade elementary students. Students will learn to play the violin, viola or cello! This program is taught by Tena Plewa, a certified and licensed music educator and is offered at the elementary schools once a week from 2:30-3:30p or 3:30pm-4:30pm (choose the time that best works for you) throughout the school year. Students will learn basic artistry fundamentals of playing a stringed instrument, learn to read notes, and will learn beginning string technique, instrument care and first finger position on all four strings. Why Music:

  • MUSIC IS ACADEMIC.This is traditionally the parents’ primary reason for providing music lessons to their children. Research indicates that musical training permanently prepares a young mind for enhanced performance.
  • MUSIC IS PHYSICAL. Music can be described as a highly sophisticated sport, requiring advanced coordination skills and multi-sensory integration.
  • MUSIC IS EMOTIONAL. Every child requires an artistic, creative outlet. Music may be your child’s vehicle for self-expression.
  • MUSIC IS FOR LIFE. Most people can’t play soccer or football at 70 or 80 years of age but they can play their instrument. The gift of music you give your child lasts their entire life!

Did You Know...That Playing An Instrument Can Improve A Child's Grades & Test Scores?: High school music students score higher on SAT's in both verbal and math than their peers. In 2001, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 41 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework/experience in the arts.

Did You Know...That Playing Music Can Help All Students Achieve Success: Music training helps all students achieve success.  In Rhode Island, researchers studied eight public school first grade classes. Half of the classes became “test arts” groups, receiving ongoing music and visual arts training. In kindergarten, this group had lagged behind in scholastic performance. After seven months, the students were given a standardized test. The “test arts” group had caught up to their fellow students in reading and surpassed their classmates in math by 22%. In the second year of the project, the arts students widened this margin even further. Students were also evaluated on attitude and behavior. Classroom teachers noted improvement in these areas also.
